 Velho

Hello! I just returned from the festival at Oatland Island and I am simply amazed! I bought one of the notebooks and pens from the Drakenmere Shire booth. Who was the guy that had the little bearded dragon with wings? I'd like to contact him about making me one of those winged harnesses for my lizard!
How does one go about joining the Shire and SCA? I'd love more information! Like, what are yearly dues, how many meetings do you have to attend, etc.
You ALL did a WONDERFUL job at Oatland Island and I hope to become more involved in the future!!!

The seneschale (like the club president) and hospitaler (like the welcome wagon) are still at Oatland, but I know they will be in touch soon. There are regular meetings they can tell you about, and regular 'events' we attend (or host) where you spend the entire weekend in medieval/renaissance activities. Hang in there, someone will be back with you soon. Check out http://www.sca.org for the national webpage and http://www.meridies.org for the local 'kingdon' of GA, AL, half of TN, panhandle of FL, and a few other misc. cities/towns in other states.

Thanks! It was all so much to take in, and we were working on such a tight time-frame...we watched a little of the fighting, the harp music, the ...I forget her name, but she was a middle eastern Countess who was weaving something. I wanted to stay the whole day! I wasn't sure who to pull for in the fighting at first  Swordfight but there was this cute guy dressed in all black! I nudged my friend and said, ''Guess we'll just root for the cute one...'' then they said his name, ''Lord Dietrich''. Wasn't sure I heard right at first, but then they said it again...and I love Marlene Dietrich, so of course we just rooted for him! Haha. ...Even though of course she wouldn't be born for hundreds of years after this epic battle to the death!  Clapping LOVED the Medieval music...are there any musicians in Drakenmere? ...I imagine I've rambled on enough for now, I'll patiently wait for everyone to get back and answer my barrage of questions :P

I'm glad you had a good time and bought one of the notebooks.  I may have been the one who sold it to you.  I was wearing a green dress and a white head wrap.

Milord Balin is the owner of the lizard.  That was quite the sensation!

There are no dues for a local group.  Membership in the SCA has sliding membership fees based on type of membership.  Next weekend a lot of us will be attending "Legends" which will be held at A. H. Stephens State Park in Crawfordville, GA.  We should be having a meeting soon.  Keep a watch on the forms and/or contact the seneschal (Dyfn) or chatelaine (Dianora di Cellini) for times and locations.

Greetings! My name is Dianora, and I'm the "welcome wagon" Mistress Derbail mentioned. I'll do my best to answer any questions you have.

Joining our Shire is as easy as coming out to meet us, deciding this is something you'd like to do, and then doing it. You can declare yourself a member at any point. Our group differentiates between member and voting member - if you want to become a voting member you need to attend six events with us. Events can be a fighter practice, a weekend event, or a meeting. But, you don't ever have to become a voting member if you don't want to - you can participate and have fun without doing that if you don't want to.

As for dues, our local group doesn't have any dues requirement. You can become a paid member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and the fee will depend on the level of membership you choose. A national membership is required to hold some offices, and you must be a member or pay a fee that is the equivalent of a membership to authorize as a fighter. Also, if you're a non-member and attend an event you will have to pay a non-member surcharge. But you don't have to pay to participate on a local level, and you can certainly take some time to make sure this is something you want to do before you pay to join.

Are you in Statesboro? We will be having a fighter practice this Sunday at 2:00 (ish). We meet at Fair Road Park, which is the park across the street - behind the Wendy's. It's between the swimming pool and tennis courts over there. If you're having a problem finding us, you can call my cell (912-690-2747) or Cam's (the marshall) cell (912-690-2791). I think that Balin (the guy with the bearded dragon) is planning to be there, too.

Our group is home to a wide variety of wonderfully skilled people, who can help get you started with whatever area you're interested in. Feel free to ask questions here, or you can e-mail me off list at dicellini@gmail.com.

Welcome!
